2024 Halliday Wine Companion
95 POINTS - Thousand Candles Singe Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 A medium, bright crimson ruby. This is the essence of good cool-climate cabernet sauvignon. Aromas of cherries, blackcurrants, violets and a little bell pepper, the oak sitting discreetly in the background. The palate is nicely weighted, the medium-bodied fruit with good intensity, while the superfine and persistent tannins make this a wine you can enjoy now and over the next seven to 10 years. A selection of the best rows getting 20% new oak. 1500 bottles produced.
Blackcurrant, blackberry, tobacco, floral, subtle roasted red capsicum, just a little cedar/vanilla oak. It’s dense, ripe dark fruit with something of an earthy/tobacco/coffee ground bass, plush silty tannin, balanced acidity, and a long savoury finish. The texture here is excellent, and the earthy/gravelly bits are right on for the grape variety, and in a strange sort of twist, it reminds me of Pomerol, if you’ll forgive me the redundant comparison. Either way, I reckon it’s a terrific wine of individual personality and robust structure. Yes.
