In our Syrah vineyard there is a small patch of volcanic soil that integrates with the more common duplex clays we see here on the property. The vines here always have balance and healthy canopies which drive fruit ripeness.

The single vineyard Syrah, year to year, comes from this patch. An intensity of colour, a lifted perfume and a soft tannin structure set this wine apart. It has a distinctive palate of blueberry and spice.

Whole bunches (80%), natural yeast ferment, no plunging or pump overs. Three weeks on skins before six months' maturation in older French oak. A saturated crimson purple. With its aromas of black raspberries, cherries, whole-bunch derived potpourri and violets, this reminds me of good St Joseph from the northern Rhône. There's excellent intensity and concentration on the palate, too, without any heaviness before finishing long, grippy tannins ensuring a prosperous life ahead.
